HAKONE GINYU -Article(5)-
Recently, we looked into high-end ryokans in Hakone and found some interesting data. Needless to say, seeing the appearance of "Hakone Ginyu" in November 2002 and its great success has since had a major impact on Hakone ryokan proprietors, who are all either building rooms with open-air baths in the high-end line or constructing new ryokans. When asked by the president of a newly built ryokan, he said that he set his rates "A little higher than those of Hakone Ginyu". He said that this was done to create the illusion that the inn was better than "Hakone Ginyu". I actually laughed when I heard the story, but I remember thinking to myself, "Hakone Ginyu's analysis is inadequate". Sure enough, the inn lost a lot of occupancy rates a few years later. It is a fact that not only here but also other ryokans with high-end prices have increased. As a result, the room rates at "Hakone Ginyu" seem to be undervalued, which is strange. This has further assisted the popularity of "Hakone Ginyu". |

We wrote that "Hakone Ginyu" is a combination of Japanese ryokan and Balinese style, but to be more precise, it may be a combination of Japanese ryokan and world style. For example, the chairs in the lobby facing the mountain, which are always seen on the official website of the ryokan and in the magazines that introduce the ryokan, are of Scandinavian design. They are the work of Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007), the legendary Danish designer. Originally, it was a redesign based on the British Windsor Chair, but it is called the Peacock Chair because of its resemblance to a peacock with its wings outstretched. Incidentally, the Peacock Chair was named after his friend and rival, the master Finn Juhl (1912-1989). Together with Arne Jacobsen, they are known as the "Three Families" of modern Danish furniture design. The Peacock chair was introduced in 1947. Even today, it is said that new ones can be purchased, but they cost less than 1 million yen each. |

Other objects collected from all over Asia, not only Bali but also Thailand and other countries, are displayed in the public facilities and in the inn. Since a large proportion of the objects are from Bali, it is easy to introduce them for convenience. Anyway, this inn is good at laying out different cultures. It resonates with the guests' sensibilities, giving them the impression of "I don't know what it is, but it's kind of nice". Perhaps this is the magic of Ginyu. |

The young landlady Mami Ota's blog tells us about the "now" of "Hakone Ginyu". Her photography skills have recently improved, and she entertains us with beautiful landscapes and seasonal images. Her warm personality comes through. Of course, she not only writes her blog, but also leads the staff as one arm of her husband, the executive director. Her passion for the inn and her seriousness about her work must be inspiring to the employees as well. As a side note, my company has several hundred clients (ryokan), but she is actually the one who receives the most calls for website consultations. The fact that the young landlady of the most popular inn in Japan gets the most calls is proof that she is dedicated to her work. I know it must be tough to work while raising a child and running a ryokan, but this is also the secret of the strength of "Hakone Ginyu". She is currently working on the development of new products for "Ginyu Spa". |
