| The Miyanoshita area of Hakone, where this inn is located, has prospered as a resort area since the early Meiji period. The Fujiya Hotel, established in 1878, probably played a role in this. The inn was designed to be a full-fledged resort hotel mainly for foreigners, and in fact, many foreign dignitaries, including General Douglas MacArthur and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, visited the area. In the photo studio located in Miyanoshita, Charles Chaplin, Helen Keller, and John Lennon can be seen. |

| Fujiya Hotel's rival at that time was the prestigious and long-established "Naraya Ryokan" (established around 1700 during the Edo Genroku period, closed in 2001). After the end of the Edo period and the start of the Meiji era, many foreigners came to Japan, and Naraya Ryokan, a hot spring inn with abundant hot spring water, became an ideal place for them to stay in order to experience Japanese culture. The name of the inn was changed to "Naraya Hotel" and it is said that it competed with the "Fujiya Hotel" for foreign guests. In 1893, an agreement was concluded to draw a line between "Fujiya" for foreigners and "Naraya" for Japanese (until the beginning of the Taisho Era). |

| "Hakone Ginyu" is a perfect balance of the exotic resort atmosphere of Miyanoshita and the Japanese ryokan style. But if Chaplin or John Lennon were alive today, they would surely have stopped by "Hakone Ginyu" ass well. This is because the inn's interior is littered with the essence of good old Japanese culture and an awareness of Japan in the midst of Asia, in what might be called a 21st century style. How many modern Japanese houses have a purely Japanese style? How many houses have no wooden flooring or Western-style rooms? Japanese people are skilled at arranging and blending their own Japanese culture with cultures imported from outside, and harmonizing them as their own culture. In this sense, "Hakone Ginyu" seems to be a life-size projection of today's Japan. For this reason, Hakone Ginyu can be called a modern-day version of a Japanese-style ryokan. |
