KANNON ONSEN -Facilities & Hot Spring Reports (1)
Heading west toward Matsuzaki on Prefectural Route 15 from the outside of Shimoda City, you will be greeted by a peaceful scene of the deep green mountains of Okushimoda. Right in the middle of the road, the road turns off at a place called Yokogawa and weaves through a peaceful, narrow farm road, where you will be greeted by a forest road. Further on, the road leads to a basin surrounded by mountains. In the mountains of Okushimoda is "Kannon Onsen," a hot spring resort with an area of 500,000 tsubo (approximately 35 times the size of Tokyo Dome). The property, which is about 35 times the size of the Tokyo Dome, is filled with a variety of attractions that are beyond the scope of a hot spring ryokan. |

Entrance to the main building of "Kannon Onsen" | |
In front of the entrance of this main building is a garden that Kazue Suzuki, the owner of "Kannon Onsen", proudly created with her staff by operating a jumbo truck herself. The garden, which uses trees and stones found here in the mountains of Okushimoda and makes the most of nature, seems to express the inn's identity. The garden has been under construction for a long time and has finally been completed, but it will be constantly changing in the future. |

It is difficult to get a complete picture of this inn, which is spread out over a vast area. It is not only a hot spring resort, but also a medical treatment facility that offers long-term stays for the purpose of hot spring cures, as well as a training camp equipped with a martial arts hall and gymnasium. The facilities are diverse, with four main lodging buildings: the "Honkan," the "Seiunkan," the "Pygmalion," a new building, and the "Ubusuna-tei," a detached building. There are a total of three large public baths for men and women, each with an open-air bath, where you can fully enjoy the hot water of which the inn is so proud. In addition, there are six greenhouses with their own vegetable garden on the slope, and a boxing and weight-training gym next to the greenhouses. The martial arts hall on the first floor and the gymnasium on the second floor of the "Seiunkan." There is also a wasabi (Japanese horseradish) field, a PET bottle filling plant for the above-mentioned drinking spring, and even a helipad. As such, "Kannon Onsen" can be described as a multifaceted facility, a hot spring resort facility, that goes far beyond the framework of a hot spring inn. Let us now introduce you to the inn's hot spring facilities. There are a total of three large baths for men and women: the "Kannon Principle," which has an open-air bath that doubles as a day trip hot spring and private bath; the "Galatea", a large bath with an open-air bath equipped with 11 bathing facilities; and a large bath with an open-air bath exclusively for the "Ubusuna-tei" (a detached building). About 70% of the guest rooms are equipped with hot spring baths. Surprisingly, all of these bathing facilities, with the exception of the hot spring pool in "Galatea", use 100% spring water without any addition of water. It is an undeniable fact that the amount of hot spring water from the inn's own hot spring is too luxurious for a single inn or facility. First, let us introduce you to the "Kannon Principle," a day trip hot spring facility completed in August 2010. This expansive bathing facility has two faces. The first face is a public bathhouse with separate open-air baths for men and women. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays (until 5:00 p.m. on weekends), it is a bathing facility for day-trippers. Of course, overnight guests are also welcome. The other face is a private open-air bath and private bath for overnight guests only. Available during the nighttime hours from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., there are two separate locations for men and women, and six groups can make reservations per day. |

Both men's and women's baths share the same structure, with an open-air bath and an indoor bath, and are equipped with large bathtubs that take advantage of the abundant hot water. All bathtubs are made of luxurious all-cypress wood, so you will be able to enjoy bathing in a luxurious atmosphere. Outside, there is a large open-air bath and a Jacuzzi bath. Next to the open-air bath, a vibratory bath (Jacuzzi) and sauna are also equipped. Furthermore, it is amazing that it is equipped with a footbath as well. |

The "Kannon Principle" has a spacious and comfortable dressing room. There are numerous dressing counters, so it will never be crowded. The variety of amenities is also a high point. |

After bathing, you should first go to the area marked "Air Towel". This is to prevent the bath towels from wiping off the hot spring elements that have gone to the effort of adhering to your body. When you turn on the switch, a breeze comes out, which you can apply to your body to dry it and allow the onsen elements to permeate your body. These facilities, though small in detail, are a glimpse into the inn's strong commitment to its onsen. Massage chairs and massage beds (charge applies) are available on the side of the room. They are good for resting your tired body after a long hot spring bath. |

The inn is sometimes used as a private training camp for professional athletes and candidates for the Olympic team. For this reason, the "Kannon Principle" is also well-equipped with exercise equipment. The "Flavelos II" exercise machine, which can provide 3,700 steps of exercise in 10 minutes, and an aerobic bike are also available. After sweating it out first, taking a hot spring bath is sure to help you tone your body even more. |

Amenities are also available. Cosmetics (lotion, milky lotion, and beauty lotion) using hot spring water from the "Kannon Onsen" and "drinkable hot spring water" are available. |
