| Kaminoyama Onsen is located almost in the center of Yamagata Prefecture, about 13 km south of Yamagata City, the prefectural capital. It is said that the hot spring was discovered by a traveling monk in 1458. Later, in 1625, the Lord (Tonosama) who governed the hot spring area allowed the general public to use it. The public bathhouse "Shimo-Oyu" that still remains in the Tokamachi area was completed at that time. During the Edo period (1603-1867), the Kaminoyama clan governed the area, but the clan's lord changed rapidly, and around 1697, Matsudaira Nobumichi finally arrived from Bitchu (Okayama Prefecture), and the Fujii Matsudaira family became the lord of this area until the end of the Edo period. The town prospered as a castle town of 30,000 goku (crop yields), and at the same time, it was developed as a therapeutic hot spring resort. Today, many sources are gushing in each area, centering on the Yumachi area with its hot spring atmosphere and the Arayu area where hot spring water was first released in 1921, as well as in Tokamachi, Kawasaki, Hayama, and Takamatsu. These 6 areas together create the "Kaminoyama Onsen". "Tenboroten-no-Yu Arimakan" is located in the Arayu district, near Kaminoyama Castle, and is surrounded by kura (storehouses) and yashiki (residences) that still retain vestiges of the past. Located in a residential area, the seven-story inn stands out even from a distance. Although a medium-sized inn with a total of 35 rooms, it has specifications to satisfy travelers who love hot springs, such as a bath with a view that can be reserved for private use and a large bath with various bathtubs. |

| The inn's trade name "Arimakan" comes from the fact that the first landlady was in the midst of a hot-spring cure at Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture when the hot-water source of the Arayu hot spring was discovered, and she was born in the year of the horse and believed in the Horse-headed Kannon (Goddess of Mercy). Since then, she has been collecting horse-related items, and the inn is decorated with horse goods of various sizes. It is said that a pun may be intended, a wish that "everything will go well (subete uma(hourse)ku iku)" is also included in the inn's collection. |
