FUMOTO RYOKAN -Facilities & Hot Spring Reports(1)-

Kurokawa Onsen is now well known not only in Kyushu but also throughout Japan.
In recent years, the area has made a name for itself overseas, and many foreign visitors come to enjoy its atmosphere.

There is a legend about the origin of this small spa town, which seems to embody the Japanese countryside.

Once upon a time, in Nakatsuru, Oita City, a son stole uri (gourd) from a field for his sick parents.
The landowner was angry, and the filial son was beheaded, but what fell out was the head of a substitute Jizo statue.
When an ascetic monk of the Hosokawa clan passed by this place to bring the head back to Kumamoto, the head of the Jizo spoke, "Please enshrine me in here".
When the local people carefully worshipped the Jizo head, hot spring water later gushed out from this spot.
That is the current "Jizo-do(Jizo hall)" and the hot spring that gushed out is still popular among the locals at the public bathhouse "Jizo-yu(Jizo spa)" across the road and along the Tanohara River.

Located alongside Jizo-yu is "Fumoto Ryokan", the most popular ryokan in Kurokawa.
In this hot spring resort town where many tourists enjoy walking around town, everyone will pass by this ryokan.

The famous "Nyuto Tegata(bathing pass)" was one of the factors that promoted this town walking tour and also contributed to Kurokawa Onsen's growing name recognition.
For 1,500 yen, visitors can "Hashigo" (go to the open-air baths) at three of their favorite ryokan, and this has gained a reputation as an easy way to visit hot springs without staying overnight.
It has become a tradition here to see many tourists walking from inn to inn with these bathing passes hanging around their necks.
They tie the bathing passes used by tourists with prayers for "fulfillment in love", "traffic safety", "academic achievement", and other such wishes.
This is and always has been the center of Kurokawa Onsen.

From Kawabata Street, which runs along the Tanohara River in the center of the hot spring resort area, a few stone steps lead down to the entrance of "Fumoto Ryokan".

It is built on an extensive site, with the quaint main building, a triangular-roofed "Yu-goya(bathhouse)" connected by a drum bridge across the river, and an annex "Roku-an", spread out on a slope across the road.
The inside of the building has the same appearance of a country house. A series of deep-colored wooden floors are laid.
