FUMOTO RYOKAN - Article(1)-
"Fumoto Ryokan" is located in the very center of Kurokawa Onsen. No need to tell how prosperous it was, but it was a very difficult time for the business at the time of its establishment. Originally, the ryokan named "Tsuruya" was purchased by the previous generation and renamed "Fumoto Ryokan", which opened in 1955. The ryokan was named by Soju Takano (1893-1976), who was a disciple of the haiku poet Kyoshi Takahama. The interior of the ryokan, a pure Japanese-style wooden structure, gives the impression of a countryside atmosphere. |

The current landlady (okami), Kumiko Matsuzaki, a native of Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture, married into the ryokan in 1980. At that time, there was no looks of the current Kurokawa Onsen, and most of the inns were quiet and deserted situation. In 1986, the current president (the second generation) Ikuhiro Matsuzaki (now executive director of the Kurokawa Hot Springs Association) and the landlady of the ryokan, created a "bathing pass (Nyuto Tegata)" that allowed visitors to tour the open-air baths at each ryokan, and this gradually gained attention. |

The following year, 1987, the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shinbun and other media outlets began to pick up on it extensively, and it was around that time that the "Kurokawa Onsen" began its rapid rise to popularity. The atmosphere of a remote hot spring resort in a narrow mountainous area, along with the abundance of open-air baths, brought nostalgia to city dwellers. The highest period was from 2001 to 2003. Every inn was full every day. Every Japanese person has at one time or another admired the sight of people wearing yukata, zori sandals or geta, and using "Nyuto Tegata(bathing pass)" to tour the baths. |
