Mt. Tanigawadake | |
Tanigawa Onsen is is said to have been opened about 600 years ago and a hot spring area located just below the south side of the majestic Mt. Tanigawadake, in a rich natural forest and along the clear waters of the Tanigawa River, where one can experience nature firsthand. There is a legend about the opening of the hot spring. Once upon a time, night after night, the riverbanks would glow mysteriously. The wondering villagers secretly approached the place and saw a gloriously beautiful princess (Princess Kihanasakuyahime) purifying herself. The villagers, frightened that she might be an incarnation of Fuji Asama Daibosatsu, tried to get even closer, but the princess mysteriously disappeared with the light, and hot spring water gushed out from the place where she had purified herself. Thinking it was a blessing from the Bodhisattva, the villagers rejoiced and bathed in the hot water, and their fatigue and illnesses were quickly healed. This is also the reason why it was called "Mimosuso-no-Yu" in ancient days. It was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that the name Tanigawa Onsen became known throughout Japan as it is today, when Mitsusada-in, princess of Isemori Sanada, visited the hot spring for a cure and was completely cured of her illness. Have you ever heard of the alpine plant called "Hosoba Hinausuyukisou"? It is a national monument and is rarely seen in Japan except on Mt. Tanigawadake, where it is commonly called "Edelweiss" and is known as the flower of Tanigawa Onsen. This hot spring area, which is one with nature, with its riverside open-air baths, murmuring mountain streams, and the occasional cry of a river deer, has been loved by many writers and artists, as evidenced by the stone monument to Osamu Dazai and the poem monument to Makisui Wakayama. Tanigawa Onsen is one of the so-called Minakami Onsengo (hot spring resorts), but it has been welcoming many guests from a different vector from the central part of Minakami Onsen, where large onsen ryokan (hot spring bathhouses) are crowded. Although it is a small hot spring area with only 4 inns and several pensions and guest houses in operation, it is currently the most popular area in the Minakami Onsengo area. There are several reasons for the popularity of this hot spring area, but the view of Mt. Tanigawadake, a famous mountain peak, right before one's eyes is a great advantage, even for a hot spring area in the mountains. In addition, the remote, quiet, and nature-rich environment of the hot spring area as a whole seems to create a healing space. |
