| Before talking about "Tenshi no Hashigo", let us look back at the history of "Hotel Ryugu", the main building of the hotel. The founder of the hotel is Mr. Yoshimasa Matsumoto. He was born and raised here in Amakusa and has been playing in the sea, fishing since he was a little boy. After graduating from high school, he lived an average life with his wife and three children as a government employee in Kumamoto City. But he decided that he wanted to raise his children in such an environment, just as he had grown up with the sea, and resigned from his position as a government employee. |

In 1967, Yoshimasa decided to return to Amakusa and established a small aquarium in the shape of a Ryugujo (dragon's palace) and a swimming rest area and souvenir shop in Kami-Amakusa City in order to let people know about the wonderful nature and various fish in Amakusa. At the time, the aquarium was almost the same level as the fish tank in a fish shop. |
One time, one of the customers said, "I want to enjoy fishing easily", so he built a simple fishing pond. Another time, a customer said, "I want to eat the fish I catch", so he built a cafeteria. Finally, one day, a customer said, "Can I stay here?". So, the cafeteria became a guest house. It is interesting to note that the business became a inn when he responded to the needs of his customers. "Ryuguso" opened with a total of nine rooms, only two years after the opening of the souvenir shop. However, there were no hot springs in Amakusa Matsushima at this time. The hot spring opened in 1981. A 700-meter borehole was drilled, and hot spring water with a source temperature of 36°C was dug, thus beginning the history of the hot spring area. The drilling of hot springs also provided a tailwind, and "Ryuguso" was in good business and underwent expansion and renovations. When the new building was constructed in 1992, the trade name was changed to "Hotel Ryugu". The number of guest rooms was increased to 37 ( now 41 rooms). In 1998, the hot spring association again conducted a borehole drilling. After drilling 1,330 m, the long-awaited high-temperature (44 °C) spring water was dug. This hot spring is still in use to this day, with abundant hot water and a stable supply. In 1999, "Sarasa-kan" was constructed as an extension. A hall, chapel, and 10 guest rooms were completed. In 2004, "Umihotaru" was newly built. Five private baths, a bedrock bath, and a footbath bar were completed. |

Then, in August 2008, "Tenshi no Hashigo" opened. The "Tenshi no Hashigo" was created as a "hotel within a hotel" within the "Hotel Ryugu", with a total of 8 suites with open-air baths, for those who wish to enjoy more luxurious adult holidays. "Tenshi no Hashigo" refers to the so-called "twilight rays" that appear to lights down to the ground when the sun is hidden by clouds, with rays of sunlight leaking through the gaps and edges of the clouds. |
