OTARU KOURAKUEN -Facilities & Hot Spring Reports(5)-
One of the attractions of the Otaru Kourakuen is its hot springs.
Even though Hokkaido is a treasure trove of hot springs, Otaru may not be associated with hot springs.
However, Otaru Kourakuen is the only private ryokan in the area that has its own private hot springs.
The spring is an Alkaline Simple Hot Springs with a pH of 8.4.
The temperature of the spring is 27.4°C, so it is heated.
According to the hot spring analysis chart, even though it is a simple hot spring, it contains 168.3 mg of sodium ions and 65.1 mg of chlorine ions per kilogram of hot spring water, so it probably has a warming effect.
This means that even after bathing, one's body will feel warm and the water will not cool down easily.
What makes it unique is that it contains 200.8 mg of sulfate ions.
Its function is to send more oxygen to the blood and to be good for the skin, such as skin diseases and cuts.
Speaking of good for the skin, it also contains 108.5 mg of metasilicic acid, which has recently been attracting attention as a natural moisturizing ingredient.
It is a simple hot spring with the above-mentioned good qualities and no peculiarities, so it is not likely to cause hot water shock.
The volume of this hot spring is about 60 liters per minute, so even though it is impossible to completely free-flow the source, it is poured into the large baths, open-air baths, private baths, and guest room open-air baths while being circulated and filtered.
Even though this inn has as many as 28 guest rooms with open-air baths, the public baths are well provided.
The "Iwa-no-Yu" and "Mori-no-Yuya" are both equipped with open-air baths.
The men's and women's baths are switched according to the time of day.
First is the "Iwa-no-Yu" located in the back of the lobby, which was renovated in April 2016.
The indoor bath, designed in the image of a white-walled warehouse, has a high ceiling from which hot water stream can escape, giving it a great sense of spaciousness.

Beyond the indoor baths were open-air baths . The natural stone layout of the baths creates a wonderful ambience full of natural beauty. There is also a footbath space.

In December 2023, an authentic Finnish sauna was newly built at the end of the public bath "Iwa-no-Yu". Visitors can also enjoy self Löyly.

In winter, snow piles up in the "Totoinoi" space, so some guests are diving into the snow instead of taking a water bath.

Article creator of this ryokan
CEO of Onsen.com Co.,Ltd.
For more than 30 years, he has been visiting hot spring ryokans all over Japan, persuading innkeepers of the need for "private baths". He is still a traveler who spends half of the year at a hot spring. In addition to being a article creater, photographer, and drone pilot, he also designs websites and provides consulting services.

This was my fifth time staying at this inn and the last time was a year and a half, still the same warm hospitality and relaxed family time. The food was very satisfying. The bath was wonderful and we would like to come back again on another visit.
